Last night Doodle had a really high fever and kept pointing to his head that it hurt. You can't tell how miserable he was by this picture I took tonight, just 24 hours later. He is a completely new kid! (I know the picture is time stamped 12/18 because I can't figure out how to fix it...so I digress) He woke up yesterday morning at 5:00am burning up and he barely slept all night, he kept waking up and crying. What scares me the most about him pointing to his head is that he is having mini seizures or maybe had a big seizure while he was sleeping. How would I know?
What I do know is that this poor little guy has been sick 80% of his life. He is constantly fighting something and there is something seriously wrong with his immune system. But what? The last time he went to the doctor, we specifically asked his pediatrician Why and How he could be so sick for so long and this many times a year-- this can't be normal. She told us that it is normal for kids his age...What the? And that kids get 12 viruses on average a year. Hmmmmm. I don't remember Jimmy being sick like this, at least once a month. Are there just that many more strains of viruses going around? We had his tonsils and adenoids removed when he was two because of how often he was getting upper respiratory infections, colds and sore throats. The surgery hasn't seemed to decrease the amount or level of sickness in him. Whatever the reason, it has turned me into a real germaphobe. I find myself washing my hands several times a day and I carry hand sanitizer with me wherever I go because I am so afraid I am going to bring something else home to him from the grocery store or somewhere. I almost refuse to use a public restroom unless it is imperative or 100% necessary and completely unavoidable and when I do, I don't touch anything with my hands. I pull my sleeve over my hand and I flush with my foot.
I don't worry about things like his lungs and fevers that much on a daily basis because we have a nurse every day except Saturday that checks him and takes his vitals, so in a way I feel like he is getting good medical care at home. But, when I went to call the Doctor to see if I should be worried about him holding his head, I went to the Nursing Log and checked the last few days to see if he had been running a fever and maybe they forgot to tell me. Each day the nursing log said 97.5 degrees. Which struck me as a little weird that his temperature never fluctuated, even on days when I knew he was sick and felt warm to me. I went to find my ear thermometer (like the one the nurses use every day) and I noticed the battery light was on. I left Doodle with the nurse and went to the drugstore to get new batteries. When I came back the Doodle was sleeping. The nurse left and told me he was fine, sleeping it off and that his temperature was 97.5. A couple of minutes later, I went into the bedroom to check on him and saw that his breathing was really fast and I felt him and he was burning up. I put the new batteries in my thermometer and he had 103 fever. I checked it again about 10 minutes later and it went up to 104.5. I checked the thermometer that the nurses had been using and guess what? Yup. It told me he was 97.5.
Brain damage can begin at 105 degrees and with fevers come seizures, so at this point I am freaking out. I immediately called the doctor and he had me give him a full dose of children's Tylenol and children's Motrin at the same time. He said if his fever didn't come down to 101 or lower to bring him to the Emergency Room. Ugh. I was sick to my stomach. So I waited and waited and finally his temperature dropped to 99. Scary. Even scarier? A nurse that doesn't check the batteries in the thermometer and doesn't find it peculiar that a very sick and hot boy's temperature is 97.5 just because the thermometer says it is.

School = Sickness
The Doodle is sick, after just two days back in school. He hasn't been sick in months. Now, he's sick again. He catches everything.
He's a mess.
Jim was home today and accidentally scratched him in the eye.
His nose and cheeks are all red from the snot coming out of it and the constant wiping. It's gross.
So, he's home. Fever, cough and runny nose. He's hard enough when he's healthy, throw some flu symptoms in there and you can count on needing a Calgon Bath and an Ambien to seriously take you away. It's not like being sick actually slows him down much, you don't exactly get a break--it just makes him a little more cranky and hard to handle.
Good times.

Taking Health for Granted

Our poor little Doodle with the bad behavior.
He's been sick. Again. With what I thought was just a minor cold. He's had the usual runny nose and cough but last night when it was time for bed, he couldn't calm down. The last couple of nights we have fought with him to settle down and go to sleep. He thrashes around the bed, moaning and humming and crying and refusing to go to sleep.
Last night, after he finally wore himself out and went to sleep, he was agitated and breathing hard. His breathing never subsided even after he went to sleep and was fully relaxed. He was huffing and puffing and panting like an out of breath dog would do. He was grinding his teeth and clinching his eyes shut. Every once in a while he'd hold his breath and stop breathing. I was freaking out and just watching him.
He couldn't breathe through his nose but yet couldn't figure out how to breathe through his mouth either so he would stop breathing but still be asleep. Then he would wake himself up in a fit of coughing and choking.
After 20 minutes of his breathing never relaxing or calming back down to normal and my sitting there watching him, wondering if he was having an asthma attack or worse, I decided to take him to the emergency room. It was around 11:30 pm.
He woke up fine and was doing a little better at the hospital. His breathing was somewhat back to normal. We waited and waited to be seen at the oh-so-fun emergency room and after over an hour and a half of him screaming, I finally decided to leave. We were never seen by the Doctor. He was getting so upset, I thought he might have a seizure and the constant crying was making his runny nose a stuffy disgusting mess. At this point, I was just making it worse for him.
Bad Mom.
We got home around 1:00 am and miraculously he went to sleep pretty quickly. He went to sleep, I did not. I kept having visions of him not breathing and dying, so I slept with one eye open and never really went to sleep. I was watching his chest move up and down and trying to listen for his breaths.
All day I have been exhausted.
I took him to his Pediatrician this morning because all night I thought he might have pneumonia, asthma or maybe the Swine Flu. Luckily he didn't. He just has a virus. Obviously he has a very weak immune system and I wish I could figure out why.
As I lay there watching him sleep last night, all kinds of things were racing around my head. I was trying to figure out what percentage of this little guy's life has been spent being sick, being poked and prodded in the hospital, getting xrays and eegs and mri's, and how much of his life he has had just feeling sick--whether it be from seizures or the medication or both. My guess would be at least 75% of his life has been uncomfortable for him. I never thought before about taking good health for granted, it makes me realize it's not a given.
Baby It's Cold Outside...and so Rainy
And, we have a cold. The Doodle is sick again. Every other week he's sick. I'm not sure what is going on with that little guy's immune system. No fever this time. Just your every day runny nose cold and cough.
The cold hasn't seemed to keep him down. He's got enough energy to throw his macaroni and cheese on the floor.
He doesn't really go anywhere except for preschool and none of us are sick so where he keeps getting infected with these virus's is a mystery.
Tomorrow's our big IEP meeting that the district called to try to justify getting rid of our nurse Lulu or maybe take the Doodle out of the medically fragile class because of his bad behavior. I'm not really sure what they are going to say; I feel a little bit blindsided. What I do know is that I have a letter from the Doodle's doctor at UCSF that recommends keeping the nurse since we have not completely controlled all of the Doodle's seizure activity and it's only been four months with the improvement in the head drops.
My hand written and signed by all IEP clearly states that we should have the nurse through this school year which is why I think this IEP is going to be about re-placing him somewhere else. Technically we are in a different school district, but because they couldn't accommodate a medically fragile child, they transferred us to a different school district that could.
I'll keep you posted with the results from tomorrow's meeting.

Doodle

Our Doodle is sick.
And tired.
And sick and tired of being sick and tired.
And not at all his usual terror-self...wreaking havoc all over the house. I think it's been a couple of days now since he purposely broke something.
His fever has been coming and going between 99 and 102.
He just wants to be held.
He's not sleeping well, which means none of us are.
Now he has a cough to go nicely with his fever.
He got up for the first time today in a couple of days and pushed his little shopping cart around.
He's pretty sad.
He wanted nothing to do with getting his picture taken in his new soft and padded hat.
There's nothing worse than having a sick child. My heart aches for him and I'm pretty sure he doesn't understand why he feels so crummy. He's been holding the back of his head. And I'm trying not to think the worst. I'm hoping it's just a minor headache.
We're giving him Tylenol around the clock, hoping to break the fever before any seizures can come through. Hopefully we're on the way out of this. And hopefully, none of us get this; whatever this is.

Under the Weather
Date night last night was canceled because the Doodle is sick.
Again.
Not sure how he got sick this time since we have barely left the house and he hasn't been in school...no one else is sick around here. But, he's got a 101 fever which feels more like 105 degrees since he insists on laying on top of me with that big, hot head of his. He started getting sick yesterday afternoon and by evening he was feeling pretty crummy. Nobody got any sleep, he was up crying and hallucinating most of the night. I would say seizure activity was up but I can't be 100% sure. I hate it when he's sick because I fear the seizures will come back. Fevers induce seizures in already seizure prone children (and adults). So, I sit here, waiting and watching and hoping for the best. It's Tylenol and extra hugs around here while we wait for his fever to break.
We had Nurse Lulu today so Jim and I went to Olive Garden for lunch and then to see a matinee...we saw, It's Complicated with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin and were both pleasantly surprised. It was a great movie--lots of laughs and Alec Baldwin was perfectly cast. Nothing like a good movie on a grey Sunday afternoon, just the two of us.
And You Thought You Were Sick and Tired
But there's nothing finer than a clean, cuddly Doodle Bug. Except maybe a Doodle that goes to sleep sometime before 11:30 p.m. which is tonight. It's 9pm and he is fast asleep and I get to put down my laptop and watch a grown up show instead of Wow Wow Wubsy. Maybe I get so irritable because all I get to watch are children's cartoons. If you had to watch hour upon hour of Wonder Pets, Blues Clues and Wow Wow Wubsy, you too might want to kickety-kick something. Instead I was tortured watching some new horrible Courtney Cox sitcom called Cougartown. I actually found myself embarrassed for her.
The Doodle is still getting over his cold. It's amazing that I never got it. Poor Doodle's face is all red and irritated from the constant wiping large amounts of SNOT. He's such a trooper with letting me use the suction to suck it out. I know, I know, too much information...
Good times. Hopefully, CSI New York will be better.
