My Small Claims Court Appeal Ruling...

Two posts in one day? Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.
Just as I had suspected; ruling for the Plaintiff. (Dr. Julie Griffith, San Rafael, CA)

Just got our ruling in the mail today and the Judge has ordered me to pay the unethical Dr. Julie Griffith, San Rafael, CA the sum of $1260. Not a surprise since he made it really clear this court date wasn't about who lied, misdiagnosed, over prescribed medicine, showed poor ethical behavior, had ridiculous billing practices; was insane, shady, grandiose, mislead patients, money-grubbing, fraudulent, and gave other DAN! Doctors a bad name.

The judge did not include a written reason or decision which kind of bums me out. He said nothing. No explanation at all. He must have seen some dishonesty or delusion in her character because he was nice enough to knock $500 off my bill. Gee. Thanks. I guess he felt like maybe alarming the parent of a two year old unnecessarily and diagnosing her son with a severe brain malformation and then talking about an untrue diagnosis of Dandy Walker for 2 hours might seem a little excessive and calculating; even on the brilliant Dr. Julie Griffith's clock. (insert big court room outburst sigh here)

Will I pay her? Yes. But only because of this terrific legal binding court order to do so. But unfortunately, since all of my money is tied up in change and we have real doctor bills received from real doctors who provide actual medical care instead of taking the patient on a trip to Never-Never Fantasy Land, she is going to have to accept payments in the form of maybe $10 a month for 129 months or so. What's 10 years or so between adversaries?

The only good thing from all of this is that I now have even more ammunition to take this doctor down...with the former patients that have since come forward and because we now have PROOF of Dr. Julie Griffith's misconduct to take to a very different venue so that she can be held accountable for being the FRAUD that she is.

The way this Doctor has behaved will surely raise some eyebrows at the State Medical Board and also at the Federal level.

Still waiting for a silver lining on this one. I guess it has taught me not to be so trusting of someone just because they have a degree on their wall and claim to be a Doctor. Next time I will thoroughly check out a physician before I make an appointment. Next time I will pay better attention to the RED FLAGS such as how many reputable doctors are literally working out of their living room and refusing to bill insurance. Hmmmm.
It's clear that Dr. Julie Griffith, San Rafael, CA is card-carrying member of the Liar's Club...Stay tuned. I'm in this one for the long haul. I will take this as far as I can until I can get some justice.

Puh-lease...

Got a certified letter today from the one and only Dr. Julie Griffith in San Rafael, California. At first I thought maybe she was apologizing for being such a horrible doctor and overprescribing him medication which most likely caused his head drop seizures and for also misdiagnosing him with so many different diseases in our very first consultation at her office where she had the nerve to charge us $1687. Then I remembered she has no integrity.

It was a letter from her threatening me with a lawsuit for slander. Apparently she didn't like my report I wrote about her, documenting the facts, regarding our consultation at Rip Off Report.com:

http://www.ripoffreport.com/doctors/dr-julie-griffith/dr-julie-griffith-www-mybrain-7c42d.htm

The thing is, it is my right to have an opinion and it is my right to report, write and talk about my account of the appointment and it's outcome. There's this beautiful thing called the Bill of Rights and Freedom of Speech. Does she really think she can censor me? Wait until she finds out I've contacted ABC News - Finney on your side. How about my complaint I filed with the Medical Board, is that too slander? What about all of the people who have "opinions" about our President and public figures?

Yes, I wrote her back. And yes I will send it to Dr. Griffith certified mail.

On one level I was really ready to just pay the bad doctor, chalk it up to a learning experience and move on. But after this latest threat, I think I will now appeal the small claims judgement in Superior Court and sue this fraud of a Doctor for the over prescribing of medication, the misdiagnosis and malpractice and numerous HIPPA laws she has violated.

I should have done it a long time ago and I've got nothing but time.

Justice Has Not Been Served

A cap to my 65 hour work week...

We got our decision from the small claims court judge. Unbelievably, I lost! I'm still not able to process the fact that the judge could not see merit in the reason I disputed the charge from the Fraud Dr. Julie Griffith, a poor excuse of a Neurologist and even worse D.A.N. Doctor.

Evidently, according to the small claim's court Judge's decision, I should have sued her first in Superior Court--but for what I'm not sure. What I am sure about is that none of our expectations were met from the appointment. She did nothing but make matters worse. She purposely and fraudulently gave us a trio of misdiagnosis on the Doodle in order to keep me there in her chair at $500 per hour and try to get us back for future $500 per hour appointments. Nothing she said was true or correct. How can you be that negligent and/or stupid as a Doctor unless you're doing it on purpose?

So it must have looked pretty bad that I was the "defendent" instead of the "plaintiff" and the fact that I stupidly missed our first court date probably didn't help.

This crazy doctor never even physically examined the Doodle and with that negligently prescribed him 2antiseizure drugs which triggered his head drop seizures. The icing on the cake was that she refused to speak with me unless I brought the Doodle back to her office for $500 per hour or gave her a credit card over the phone for a $400 per hour phone appointment.

This court decision is outrageous and at this point I am so upset about it I can't think straight. It's not about the money at this point. It's about principle and teaching this doctor that she can't take advantage of parents who are already desperate for answers, trying to find a reason to remain hopeful and wanting what is best for their child. She has no business being in a position of trust like that when she is so untrustworthy.

I haven't decided yet if I should appeal it in Superior Court. Basically, the Judge only looked at the black and white facts--we had an appointment, I knew her hourly rate, I stayed at her office for 3 hours, I signed the credit card slip for $1687 at the time of the appointment and then later I disputed it. Period. End of case. The Judge did not take into consideration why I disputed the charge or look at this crazy doctor's practices.

If you take your car to a mechanic they make you sign an estimate with their hourly rate, you pick your car up only to hear that all of these horrible things are wrong with your car. But you pay them because you are grateful that at least they figured it out. You take your car home and now the car is far worse than when you brought it to to the shop. You find out that all of the things they told you were wrong with the car were never really wrong with the car. When you call to talk to the mechanic about it, they refuse to talk to you unless you give a credit card. Just because you signed the estimate at the time of service does not mean you should have to pay for their time when nothing was fixed and the car is now undrivable because of what they did to it. Why shouldn't this Doctor be held to the same consumer standards as a freaking mechanic?

I want to cry. Then when I think of the tears I've already shed at the hands of this quack of a Doctor who moonlights as a massage therapist, I get angry. Thank goodness for www.ripoffreport.com. I will tell as many mothers of autistic children in the area that I possibly can about this experience with Dr. Julie Griffith. I will continue to puruse my complaint with the California Medical Board and I will write letters to organizations like Generation Rescue, Autism Speaks and Talk About Autism Now.

So what am I paying $1687 for? Oh yes, for wide-eyed and ignorantly sitting in her chair while she told me my son had a brain malformation that he didn't really have and so that she could waste my time and freak me out when it wasn't true. Is she not accountable for her mistakes? Part of me wants to appeal it. Part of me wants to pursue it and see it through to the bitter end and actually counter sue her. It will take time, money and effort and I'm not sure I have the fight in me. Part of me wants to just put it all behind me and chalk it up to a learning experience.

Of course this sucks because I have real, legitimate medical bills from genuine medical doctors from all of the Doodle's treatments, radiology, medications and hospital stays over the last year.

Frankly, I don't know how Dr. Julie Griffith sleeps at night knowing that she changed the course of of a little boy's life for the worse and then demanded money for it.

Dr. Julie Griffith, San Rafael, California

We went to small claims court today.

Funny. There was nothing small about it.

Besides being admonished by the judge right out of the gate for interrupting, I think it went well. I know my 185 page color tabbed binder was a bonus. I think Dr. Griffith was a little overwhelmed by it when the Bailiff showed it to her before he gave it to the Judge. Because I'm not a very good public speaker, it will help fill in some of the facts and blanks which I wasn't able to remember to say or convey.

Time was limited.

The awful Dr. Griffith was there. She showed up 8 minutes late, I might add.

And she got to go first.

And, unfortunately last. Which means some of her lies went without my ability to argue them. Things like she noticed during Dominic's physical examination (which never took place) that his language sounded hoarse. Is this lady nuts? I wanted to stand up in court and scream, "Hey Doc, he doesn't speak! How could you hear his hoarse voice in any language?"

She also continued to mispronounce his name, maybe intentionally, I'm not sure. But she kept calling him Dominique.

One of my favorite comments she made was when she told the Judge that I was anxious at the appointment and I cried a lot. Hmmmm. This Kook had just told me that my son had Dandy Walker, a serious brain malformation that could kill him....and apparently I was anxious and cried during the appointment. Ya think?

My other favorite comment that she kept on repeating was that she gave the Doodle "medical care" when in fact that couldn't have been further from the truth. She barely looked at him for 5 minutes during our entire consultation...he sat in the car with my mom for the remaining appointment. Where was the medical care exactly? She used that term pretty loosely.

Dr. Griffith is seriously delusional. She gave us the opposite of "medical care" and purposely tried to bilk money from me with her grand misdiagnosis and irresponsible prescription of too many anti-seizure drugs to a 2 year old.

How money grubbing is that and how desperate does this make a Doctor look? It's bad enough she is practicing medicine out of her living room at her house.

I didn't cry. Or throw up. I calmly and matter-of-factly made my case that she purposely alarmed me with the elaborate misdiagnosis during the end of my first hour so that I would be so upset, confused and shaken that she could continue the appointment to the tune of $1600. Then I explained how she never gave him an actual physical, yet proceeded to prescribe him two additional drugs; which in my opinion and other "real" doctor opinions could have been the trigger for the head drop seizures.

I made my point that the most outrageous thing of all was how she refused to come to the phone and discuss his adverse reaction to her new drugs without collecting a credit card number first so that she could charge me $400 per hour. She foolishly admitted that she did her best to get me to come back for an appointment so that she could "re-examine" the Doodle. Yeah. She wanted us to come back in the office alright so that she could charge me $500 per hour+++++

As I spoke, I kept thinking, this isn't a small claims matter, it ought to be a malpractice suit in Superior Court. I should have an attorney representing me and we should be asking for damages and pain and suffering. Dr. Griffith's narcissism is unbelievable and the ego on her is bigger than the both of us. With the unhappy former patients of hers, we could forge a class action suit against her for her gross negligence.

I'm very fortunate to have had the support of my mom and step dad. They went to court with me and coached me before and during on what to remember to say. It doesn't hurt that my step dad is a retired Assistant District Attorney in the county and court where we were today; and my mom is a retired District Attorney Investigator from there too.

But ugh. Glad it's over. We don't have a decision yet. The Judge was going to review the materials provided to her (yay. this means my binder.) and then mail us her decision.

So. My fingers are crossed and I am hoping for the best this time that justice will be served. I'll keep you posted.

Preparing Our Case

Stressing out and preparing our case for small claims court this Friday. I guess we don't find out the judges ruling on Friday, they let you know their decision some time after the hearing--which will be more stress.

$1687 to Dr. Julie Griffith, A D.A.N. Doctor (Defeat Autism Now) for an alleged "consultation" where this "doctor" decides to tell me the Doodle is not autistic, might have Lyme disease and diagnoses him with Dandy Walker, a serious malformation of the brain by looking at the same exact MRI that two other neurologists had looked at and said was Normal. She waits until the end of the hour consultation to tell me this--so that I am distraught enough and crying, thinking she just cracked the case with the autism and seizure disorder--and now my son might die.
So she continued the "consultation" and then proceeded to charge me $500 per hour for the additional two hours she went over. She never even gave the Doodle a full physical examination, which the consult was supposed to include. We were also supposed to get testing done on the Doodle for vitamin deficiencies, metals, toxins, food allergies, yeast build up, etc. No tests were done. I was sent away with a brown grocery bag full of lab tests to send off in the mail to various States--including all the paperwork.

This crack pot of a Doctor also prescribed the Doodle two very severe anti-seizure medications on top of the two that he was already on. When he had an adverse reaction to the drugs several days later, after our consultation, she refused to come to the phone to talk to me about it unless I gave a credit card and paid her $400 per hour for a phone appointment first. I should mention, coincidentally, it wasn't until she prescribed him these new drugs and had the bad reaction--which triggered and was the begin of his head drop seizures.

After I found out she misdiagnosed the Doodle with Dandy Walker in an attempt to alarm me and coerce me into returning for future appointments at $500 per hour, I fired her, stopped payment on the credit card and reported her to the California Medical Board.

So we had to prove our case to the credit card company and justify why we stopped payment on the $1687 consultation and we won our case with them. They reversed the charges. Now, this delusional, unethical "doctor" wants her money because she is insisting she provided medical care...when she never did. But there is still a chance that the judge will rule in her favor and that is a little stressful.

I've talked with another mom who had a bad experience with this same doctor, who also was misdiagnosed and who said she would write me a letter.

Bring It On Dr. Julie Griffith!

I got a little visit from the Sheriff's Department. Nothing gets the heart rate up like answering the door to see a uniformed Sheriff standing there and their Sheriff's car parked in my driveway. Of course the first thing that popped into my brain was that Jim had been in some kind of terrible car accident and this was my notification...or that maybe there was some kind of Short Bus accident and the Doodle was killed. Or that there was an incident of some kind at Jimmy's school, maybe hostages were taken...but No, thank goodness it was none of these things. I was just being served Small Claim's Court Papers by that Nutcase who calls herself a Doctor in Marin, Dr. Julie Griffith.

This is the doctor who tried her hardest to alarm us and who misdiagnosed the Doodle as having a severe birth defect and brain malformation called Dandy Walker; which was later discovered after three more opinions that HE DID NOT HAVE IT--after many sleepless nights. This is the doctor who charged me $1687 for an initial consultation and refused to bill our insurance. This is the woman who over-dosed the Doodle by putting him on 2 additional anti-seizure medications in April where he could not walk or function, sat in a chair staring at the wall, drooling and started having a brand new type of HEAD DROP SEIZURE, then refused to speak with me about his adverse reaction to the medication she prescribed him unless I paid her $400 per hour for a phone appointment!!! This is the doctor who told me the Doodle was not autistic but might have Lyme disease and another genetic disease, which according to her meant that my mom and I both had too. All of these incorrect and devastating diagnosis ended up being a ploy on her part to get us to come back into her office for $500 per hour so that she could "explain" our diagnosis to us. PUH-LEASE.

I filed a complaint against Dr. Julie Griffith located in San Rafael, CA with the California Medical Board with regard to her unethical practices.

Since my mom had put the $1687 charge on her credit card, after we discovered what a FRAUD she was, we disputed the charge. After 5 months of back and forth and having to prove our case to the credit card company, including providing a statement of misdiagnosis from our real neurologist, we won the dispute and did NOT have to pay this negligent and crooked doctor one cent.

So. Now she has decided to take me to small claims court. I CAN'T WAIT. After getting over the initial, HOW DARE HER...I am actually thrilled to get to face her in court. It is my hope that the Judge will see her actions as negligent and borderline criminal and come to a decision in our favor.

I have already heard from a few other people, after the fact, that Dr. Julie Griffith is a money grubbing alarmist doctor. Dr. Julie Griffith is a DAN Doctor, one of the only DAN Doctors in our area - which is how I came to find her. DAN stands for Defeat Autism Now, and DAN Doctors work specifically with Autistic Children in attempt to "recover" them with diet, vitamins, detoxification and the like. DAN Doctors test the children for things like metals, food allergies, vitamin deficiencies, bacteria, yeast build up, etc. It is disgusting and appalling to me that this Doctor preys on the vulnerability of parents with children with autism and special needs. She gives parents the false hope that their child can be cured of Autism if they see her for weekly appointments at $500 per hour and buy her overpriced supplements and pay thousands of dollars in lab testing for things like Lyme Disease.

Dr. Griffith ought to have her license suspended for her misconduct, not just with me but other people as well. She has no business treating patients, especially innocent children.

I am not afraid of confrontation, especially when I feel I am in the right. I am actually counting down the days to see this Woman, who has the audacity to call herself a Doctor, in court; she has no idea who she is engaging in battle.

Torn Between Two Lovers (feeling like a fool)

I've been fascinated lately with reading blogs about Autism and what other families are going through on account of I know no one who is going through this personally. Obviously, the Autism Community is divided into two groups: to vaccinate or not to vaccinate. You're either a Jenny McCarthy Hater or Lover. You either believe in the magic of detoxification or you do not. You either believe in the power of the DAN Doctor or you don't. There is no happy medium.

With all of the books on Autism I've read in the last year and a half, I would have to say, I'm leaning in the direction of Camp Jenny McCarthy. I've read and read both sides, I've listened to radio shows and watched numerous CNN reports and even self-diagnosed the Doodle with Autism after watching Jenny on Oprah. I've heard the inappropriate comments of Dennis Leary and the like and seen the Amanda Peet Public Service Announcements. And my non-lesbian crush really does find truth in most of what Jenny McCarthy is saying. It's not just her big blue eyes, large breasts and celebrity that have captured my attention, it's the fact that while she may not be a Physician, she is most definitely an expert on Autism. Anyone who has lived or raised a child with Autism is well on their way to becoming an expert in Autism and that's more than I can say for our Pediatrician.

While I do not believe that you can "cure" Autism, I believe that you can conquer it. I think you can improve the behavior and affects of Autism by making some necessary changes early on and I do believe that not every child is the same or has the same metabolic and immune system. We've known that for years. Why are some kids more prone to Cancer? Or allergies? The Flu?

I think that the things in our environment, including the plethora of shots we inject into tiny, fragile bodies without first knowing if there is something wrong with their immune system is careless and if I had a do over I would have waited to find out. I would have also spread out the vaccinations. Why do they need to give so many at once? Woulda, coulda, shoulda. When your child has a virus or fever, the Doctor sends you home from your well-baby appointment and advises you to come back when the baby is healthy for their shots. Why then do these Doctors not take their own advice at birth and test the baby for infection, virus, etc. before they go giving them their first round of shots when they are already protected at birth by the mother's antibodies. Why are there more than 5,000 open cases in our US Court system about regression after vaccinations?

What if your child is terribly allergic to certain foods; i.e. wheat, dairy, corn, nuts and the allergy is causing or contributing to these autistic and developmental symptoms? What if the child has leaky gut or a severe build up of candida, heavy metals, vitamin/mineral deficiencies or a viral infection? What if? What kind of parent would I be to not want to have my baby at least tested? Why does the Doodle have a bloated belly, digestive issues, sleep disorders, seizures, dark circles, tantrums? What if maybe I couldn't cure the Autism but at least make my child more comfortable in his skin and feel better by changing his diet, detoxing him or giving him supplements? What if it worked even just a little?

I'm going to probably get shot for saying this but, I've observed another huge difference in the "Great Divide", it would be the attitude, energy and hopefulness that Team McCarthy exhibits vs. the more surreal Doom and Gloom of the non-believers. I know this for sure, we're all struggling as parents of Autistic children in one way or another and if something can help, what harm is there in trying it?

Even with my horrible first experience with a DAN Doctor, I'm not going to give up. I will find another one or two or ten in our area and get the Doodle tested once and for all. So that I will know if there is something remarkable going on with his little system. If not, fine. I can cross it off my list.

On a lighter note, the Doodle drank out of a cup for the first time tonight. It was a bit of sensory overload for him and sure he was wearing most of his milk on his shirt but the encouraging thing was he wanted to do it again and keep trying. Maybe that was the OCD in him, but it would be so nice to have him off the bottle before he turns 3. Trying the sippy cup put the Doodle into a 2 day emotional tailspin so I'm hopeful for the cup.

My Letter to the AMA

To Whom It May Concern:

It is with complete disdain that I am writing this letter to you regarding the blatant misconduct and unethical practices of Dr. Julie Griffith.

I would like this letter to go on record as I am disputing a paid invoice for Dr. Griffith’s alleged services on April 3, 2009 for my two year old son, Dominic based on the following aftermath:

I made an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Griffith for my son who has been diagnosed on the Autism spectrum. Subsequent to his autism diagnosis he began having grand mal seizures in January of this year. It was my understanding that Dr. Griffith would complete a medical examination on Dominic and possibly refer us to various labs for relative testing.

1.) Prior to our consultation appointment on April 3rd in Dr. Griffith’s home office, I had taken the time according to the instruction of the Office Assistant, Laura, to print out and fill out—the 26 pages of questions relating to Dominic’s condition and health history. I did as instructed, which took me hours, and I brought the information with me to our appointment. It was at this time that I saw that she had just raised her hourly rate from $410 to $500 per hour—never did the Office Assistant let me know this when I was making the appointment.

A). During the appointment, Dr. Griffith did not once look at my completed paperwork-she instead asked me the same questions and typed my answers while charging me $500 per hour. 90% of the appointment was her asking me repeated questions from her website that I already answered while I watched her type her notes.

B.) This initial appointment, at my request due to financial hardship, was supposed to be 1 hour. It was confirmed during our consultation that the appointment be one hour and Dr. Griffith instructed her Office Assistant to ring her phone and let her know when one hour was up.

C.) 3 hours later, I was still being charged $500 per hour. I was charged $500 per hour even when Dr. Griffith was not actually examining or consulting with me. I was charged $500 per hour to sit in the living room of her home office while her Office Assistant gathered lab kits and filled out the paperwork for the lab requisitions. My bill came to $1566.67 for her time. Time, which she also used for bathroom breaks.

D.) During the 3 hour office consultation, she only examined Dominic by looking at him for no more than 10 minutes. Never did she check any of his vitals or conduct an actual medical examination as I was told would be completed within the actual consultation.

E.) I would also like to mention that it is the policy of Dr. Griffith’s office to NOT BILL INSURANCE for her service—now a huge red flag for me…

2.) More alarming and disturbing conduct of Dr. Griffith and her staff would be that she sent us away from her office with a very serious possible diagnosis of “Dandy Walker” a potentially life threatening brain malformation. I had brought with us, Dominic’s MRI, CT, and EEG’s—All of which had been reported by Doctors at Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa, CA as being “normal”. Dr. Griffith looked at the MRI and surmised that Dominic had a possible brain malformation and wanted to get a Third opinion from Stanford. Needless to say, this was very upsetting to me and my family.

When I was able to contact our Neurologist in Santa Rosa, he said Dominic most certainly did not have Dandy Walker…that he did not exhibit any of the other typical signs of Dandy Walker and in so many words described Dr. Griffith as “different” with many unsubstantiated and misleading ideas.

To make matters worse, the following week, Dr. Griffith’s office phoned me to say that they wanted to see Dominic back in the office for $500 per hour so that Dr. Griffith could “re-examine” him because she now felt he had another potentially life threatening brain disorder; but when I asked the office what it was, they would not tell me unless I paid for either a $400 per hour telephone appointment or came into the office for $500 per hour. It has always been my experience with any other Doctor I have ever had that if they wanted to see you—they would first tell you WHY. I could not get this information unless I paid Dr. Griffith more money first.

I expressed my grave concern and disgust for their practices to the Office Assistant. She told me she would pass this along to Dr. Griffith and give me a call back. Later that evening, I received two very startling voicemail messages from Dr. Griffith explaining to me that she now thought Dominic had Mitochondrial Disease. Although, she never once explained what Mitochondrial Disease was—she took the time to tell me it was genetic and that it was probable that my mother and I had passed it down to him. She told me we would need to be counseled and tested and that the testing was very expensive to the tune of $3000. She also told me that my mother and I would have to sign consent forms of some nature, but did not go into any other detail. This message was left for me on the following Friday, April 10th at 5:00 p.m. Now, I had to continue my weekend thinking not only does Dominic have Dandy Walker, but now my mother and I are carriers of a Mitochondrial disease of the Brain. She was nice enough to tell me…”You are welcome to call your other Neurologist, Dr. Jannean, if you have any questions”.

Of course I had questions about this new disease I had never heard of, yet when I phoned her office on the following Monday, April 13th, I was told in order to get answers I would need to make a $400 per hour phone appointment or come in for a $500 per hour.

3.) Finally, the most appalling, unethical and serious conduct of all was that Dr. Griffith prescribed two medications to Dominic for his seizures at our appointment on April 3rd: Lamictal and Zonisimide. She told me not to immediately stop his current medicine: Trileptal and Keppra—she said we had to slowly taper him off of the current medicines giving the new medicines time to “load”. She gave me a very clear and precise schedule on how to increase the dosage of his newly prescribed medicine, but neglected to give me a complete schedule on how to taper him off the existing medicine. In the notes that I was given from her office, it only said:

“4/17/09 Appt and consider taper Trileptal”

“4/23/09 begin taper Trileptal go down ½ tsp beginning in the morning every 5 days until off. Continue taper discussion.”

Never was the Keppra taper mentioned in any of her notes. She had told me at the consultation on April 3rd that “we need to get him off of the Trileptal and Keppra because they could be causing the seizures”.

When she prescribed the new medication, she never told me that the new medicine, Lamictal, that she was prescribing could cause seizures. As a matter of fact, the only two side effects she discussed with me were that one of the new medications could cause a fatal rash and I should watch for that and that one of the medications could make him sleepy.

Once I started Dominic on the additional two medications that Dr. Griffith prescribed, along with the two he was already taking, he showed immediate severe signs of side effects after the first day. He was now having head-drop type seizures and acting very strange. He could not walk two feet without falling down, he stopped making any eye contact, cried constantly as if he had a headache or other type of pain, and was very weak to the point of not being able to walk up or down a stair.

Very alarmed with the side-effects, I called the Office Assistant so that I could talk with Dr. Griffith about Dominic’s adverse reaction to the new medicines. The Office Assistant asked if I would authorize Dr. Griffith to do some “case study” on this subject at $325 per hour. I was totally outraged! I told her absolutely NOT, that this taper schedule of his existing medicine should have been provided to me at the same time she willy-nilly prescribed him the additional two drugs! The Office Assistant told me I should make another appointment and bring Dominic in to the office for $500 per hour so that Dr. Griffith could tell me how to taper the medicine and explain the potentially fatal-genetic Mitochondrial disease to me. At this point I was almost hysterical at the thought of having to pay this Doctor more money to tell me what she should have already told me. This was a serious matter and should have immediately been treated as such. I even put my request for a taper-schedule for the existing medicines into an email to Dr. Griffith so that I could get a simple response in my email without having to pay a $400 per hour phone appointment or come into the office for a $500 per hour appointment. I still have not and have never received a response to my request.

It was during that call that I told the Office Assistant to close out our file, that I would NEVER be bringing Dominic back. I hung up the phone and immediately phoned our other Neurologist, Dr. Jannean, and although he did not prescribe the two additional drugs to Dominic, he was able to tell me how to take him off of them and why. He explained to me that he would have NEVER prescribed those medicines in combination with the two Dominic was already on. He went further to say that the Lamictal can cause head-drop type seizures. These are the kinds of seizures which Dominic had never, ever had until Dr. Griffith prescribed him the Lamictal. Yet, Dr. Griffith refused to come to the phone and discuss them with me for less than $400 per hour.

I thought, once seen by a Doctor in their office, and especially after they have prescribed medicine to a patient, that you are officially a patient of record and the responsibility of that Doctor. How can this Doctor refuse to speak with me when she undertook the treatment and changed his medication without me first paying her more money. This is tantamount to extortion.

Seven hours later I received a voicemail message from Dr. Griffith telling me that I should bring Dominic back into the office so that my insurance might possibly reimburse me. She told me she would give me a 15% discount. Wasn’t that nice? Still, Dr. Griffith has not addressed Dominic’s near overdose of the medicine she prescribed, given me any kind of taper off schedule for the Keppra or answered my questions concerning the potentially terminal and genetic Mitochondrial Disease of the brain.

I think besides Dr. Griffith being a shark only out for money, I think she purposely tried to alarm me with these two possible diagnoses for my baby: Dandy Walker and Mitochondrial Disease –knowing I would be terrified and pay her more money to tell me for sure. Aside from being highly unethical, to me, this conduct borders on criminal fraud.

Angela

Here's Where You Can Put Your Case Management

What a week it’s been. I feel like I’m coming down off a bad trip of acid and I’ve never even taken acid before. The Doodle Bug continues to have seizures--even loaded up on all this medicine.

At the instruction of our new but now Fired DAN Doctor, we introduced two new medicines into our little two year old’s system. In addition to be doped up on Trileptal and Keppra, which both make him a little crazier than usual, this DAN Doctor prescribed Lamictal and Zonisamide. After just 3 doses, the Doodle could barely stand without falling over and was having a new type of head-drop seizure; where he would just fall over and hit the floor.

Not fond of having to wear his bicycle helmet around the house, he’s even more pissed off now and hard to manage. Pissed off and extremely tired, to the point of narcolepsy.

The lovely $500 an hour idiot DAN Doctor who works out of her home, should have been a red flag to me then…refuses to talk to me about his medicine dosage unless I plunk down $400 per hour for a telephone appointment or as she would recommend, I come into the office—for $500 per hour so that she can answer my questions. These are not random, how ya doin questions, these are serious questions related to the God Damn medicine she just prescribed to him that he can no longer function at all on.

Besides the pure lack of integrity and bedside manner, is this not completely unethical for a MD to prescribe you additional medicine, telling you that you need to slowly taper off the old medicine you are on, but then NEVER provide that information to you unless you come into the office and pay for the rest of the advice?

After ranting to the Office Manager, who suggested in order to get a prescription schedule or my questions answered from said idiot doctor, I should authorize “case management” which is a mere $350 per hour. After telling her where to put her case management and what an outrage this was…I told her we would not be coming back any day soon and to promptly close my file and account. Then, I slammed down my phone as hard as I could in her ear. I never said I was cool, collected and mature. Apparently, this DAN Doctor does not come to the phone for less than $400 per hour.

Since they now know that I am writing one of my letters to the American Medical Association and filing my complaint with the Better Business Bureau and YELP…I get a strange, muddled phone call from the idiot Doctor telling me the good news! She will give me 15% off. Yay. Now I can go to Vegas.
